2008 ICC Overview
2008 IEEE International Conference on Communications (ICC2008) will be held in Beijing, China, on 19-23 May 2008. ICC has been one of the flagship events for IEEE Communication Society in the past 50+ years. It is the first time that ICC comes to the largest developing country, China in the year of Beijing Olympic Games. With the theme of “Communications: Faster-Higher-Stronger”, ICC2008 will provide an open platform for the information exchanges and discussions related to the major advances in telecommunications.

ICC2008 is jointly organized by the Chinese Institute of Electronics (CIE), Chinese Institute of Communications (CIC), Tsinghua University (THU), and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications (BUPT), under the supports from National Science Foundation of China (NSFC) and major telecommunication operators and industries. The technical program will consist of Tutorials and Workshops on the latest technical and business issues in communications and networking topics, 9 Technical Symposia disseminating the latest research and development results in the areas of Advances in Networks and Internet, Communications QoS/Reliability and Performance Modeling, Communication Theory, Communication Software and Services, Information and Network Security, Optical Networks and Systems, Signal Processing for Communications, Wireless Communications, and Wireless Networking, and one General Symposium addressing the topics not covered by the technical symposia listed above. Panel discussions will also be organized to encourage interactive discussions or even debates on the hottest topics. Full details can be found at ICC2008 website www.ieee-icc.org/2008/.

Workshop on "Digital Television and Mobile Multimedia Broadcasting" co-organized by MING-T partners is co-located with ICC 2008, and will be held on 23 May, 2008.

Scope of the Workshop

Broadcasting of digital television (DTV) and mobile multimedia has been a very exciting topic in the world for years. Since DTV and high definition television (HDTV) services empowered by the advanced digital broadcasting technologies have successfully brought billions of customers the excellent watching experience never realized before from watching analog TV, it is a fast emerging area with huge economic impact.

The terrestrial broadcasting of DTV has been developed for years. Right now, there are three international digital terrestrial TV broadcasting (DTTB) standards: USA-based ATSC (Advanced Television System Committee) standard, European-based DVB-T (Digital Video Broadcasting-Terrestrial) standard, and Japan-based ISDB (Integrated Services Digital Broadcasting) standard. The Chinese government just announced its own national DTTB standard – Digital Television/Terrestrial Multimedia Broadcasting (DTMB) and it has been widely expected that the massive deployment in China will begin in 2008. The DTTB implements in many countries are still ongoing with upgrade version for certain standard on the horizon. On the other side, broadcasting networks designed for mobile multimedia like Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld (DVB-H), Terrestrial-Digital Multimedia Broadcasting (T-DMB) and Media Forward Link Only (MediaFLO) are currently under vast deployment. Some 2.5G or 3G cellular networks can also offer multimedia services to mobile devices like cell phones or PDAs. Combinations of traditional cellular networks and non-cellular broadcasting networks are still needed to be investigated. New services of mobile multimedia broadcasting will be ready for introducing new forms of interactivity, customization and personalization.

The objective of this workshop is to present the state-of-the-art research results contributing to DTV or the mobile multimedia broadcasting. This activity is also supported by IEEE Broadcast Technology Society (BTS) Beijing Chapter. We welcome all the people in DTV area to submit your latest results to make this workshop a big success. Leading engineers, researchers, and service providers from around the world will meet together to discus the challenges in the application and implementation of broadband TV/multimedia broadcasting systems.
