Tsinghua University, the most famous university in China, was established in 1911. Currently, the university consists of 44 departments distributed in 11 schools, including the schools of sciences, architecture, civil engineering, mechanical engineering, information science and technology, humanities and social sciences, economics and management, law, arts and design, public policy and management, and applied technology. The purpose of SIST is to meet the challenge of worldwide innovation in science and technology as well as the requirement of national economic development, to accelerate the advancement in information technology research and related advanced-level personnel training, to promote the interdisciplinary interaction, all of which will lead to more contribution to the national economy and nurturing of more higher quality professionals. The School of Information Science and Technology (SIST) of Tsinghua University was founded in 1994, and consists of three Departments (Electronic Engineering, Computer Science and Technology, Automation), one Institute (Microelectronics), as well as the Research Institute of Information Technology, Tsinghua National Laboratory for Information Science and Technology, Tsinghua University Software College and the National Training Center in IC. Currently, there are 666 faculties in the SIST. Among them, there are 4 academician of the Chinese Academy of Science, 4 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 158 full professors and 229 associate professors. At the present, the total enrolment of SIST is about 7358 students, including 3893 undergraduate students, 2530 master candidates, and 935 doctor candidates. Altogether, SIST offers 4 undergraduates programs as well as 13 Master- and Doctor-degree programs, it also has 4 post doctorate stations. A lot of core research projects sponsored by National NSF and National High-tech Programs are investigated in SIST. There are also numerous Ministrial- and Provincial-level R&D projects and the University-supported projects. Close collaborations with universities, research institutes and industry worldwide result in enormous outcome. International conferences held on campus and seminars presented by international scholars all help to create the free academic atmosphere.
